In Nigeria, the rainy season typically spans from March to October in the southern region and from June to September in the northern part of the country, the refreshing showers bring relief from the heat and as well present a few health challenges.
During this season, the heavy rainfall which is often accompanied by thunderstorms and occasional flooding, can also lead to soil erosion, move pathogens from one spot to another, create pools of stagnant water, and disrupt economic activities in some regions.
Waterborne diseases such as cholera and malaria become more prevalent due to stagnant water, highlighting the need for improved sanitation and drainage systems.
Typhoid, malaria, gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and even conjunctivitis are known to spread more during this season in Nigeria, because most of these diseases spread through contaminated food and water. Colds, cough and tuberculosis are also airborne.
Below are five ways to stay safe during the rainy season:
Boost Your Immunity
The damp weather can increase the risk of colds and flu. Incorporate immune-boosting foods like oranges, ginger, and local vegetables such as ugu (pumpkin leaves) into your diet. A warm cup of tea with honey can also soothe the throat and keep you cozy.
Stay Dry and Warm
Wet clothes and prolonged exposure to rain can lead to chills or infections. Always carry an umbrella or raincoat, and change out of wet clothing as soon as possible. Dry your feet thoroughly to prevent fungal infections, which thrive in moist conditions.
Watch Out for Mosquitoes
Rain creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes, raising the risk of malaria. Use insect repellent, sleep under treated nets, and clear any standing water around your home to keep these pests at bay.
Mind Your Water and Food
Heavy rainfall can contaminate water sources. Boil or treat drinking water, and ensure food is properly cooked to avoid waterborne illnesses like cholera or typhoid, which spike during this season.
Keep Moving
Don’t let the rain halt your activity. Indoor exercises like stretching or dancing to keep your energy up and your mood lifted.
By taking these simple steps, you can enjoy the rainy season in Southeast Nigeria while keeping your health in check. Stay safe and embrace the freshness of the rains!
